7 days and a distraction plan!

As of today, we are seven days away from surgery.  Everyone asks me about how Barrett is doing.  He is fine.  He doesn't act any different than before we found out that he needed to have surgery.  He acted fine then... and he is acting fine now...  :)  The only thing that he says is that he doesn't want to have surgery, but he doesn't really understand what surgery means.

The hospital called today to discuss his pre-op appointment.  They are going to schedule a tour for Barrett to see the operating room and recovery, etc. after his pre-op appointment on Monday.  At that time, they will explain everything on his level.  We had an option to go to the tour tonight, but they said that this would save us an extra trip and this way Barrett isn't worried about things for a week.  The lady that I spoke with encouraged us to make a list of Barrett's questions, so that they can go over them the day of the pre-op.

So, what of this distraction plan????

Well....a few weeks ago, we had decided to take a camping trip to a local state park.  We were going to have a 2 night stay, go fishing, make s'mores, and all of the normal camping stuff!  I think I made the reservation online on a Monday and we had Barrett's heart sonogram on Wednesday on that same week.  I had planned on taking off on Monday, since the kids are out of school for Columbus day.  As it worked out, the surgery is scheduled the Tuesday after we planned to go camping, so it all worked out.  Instead of staying two nights, we are only going to stay one night, which is fine... this will ease us into camping!  :)  Bonham's family used to go camping a lot when he was growing up.  We took the kids camping with Bonham's family a few years ago and we had a good time.  We just never got around to doing it again... so this will be a nice little get away!  A much needed distraction, if you will.  We are only going a little over an hour away, but hey, it's a start!  The kids are SO excited about going camping (the little kids and the big kids)!!!

Bonham's parents are going to meet us up there, which is great, because they have a lot of cool camping stuff!   And it's always nice to have an extra set of hands to help wrangle some kiddos!  Jayna asked Robert (also known as Grandpa) to bring his telescope that we can look at the stars - that is going to be fun, fun!  There is going to be a cowboy poet at the amphitheatre the night that we staying there.  It might be boring... might be cool... who knows!  I'm sure that the kids will enjoy it.

Since Barrett won't be able to do much for a few weeks after surgery, I think he will enjoy getting to exert a little energy.  I am going to try to take a lot of pictures and post them on the blog.  I should have plenty of time to do that on Tuesday, for sure!

Goodnight...
